How baccarat works

Baccarat looks intimidating and is actually the simplest game on the floor. Two hands are dealt — “Player” and “Banker” — and you simply bet on which will win, or on a tie. The hand closest to a total of nine wins. Tens and face cards count as zero, aces as one, and only the last digit of a total counts (a 7 and an 8 make 15, which is worth 5). An opening 8 or 9 is a “natural” and ends the hand. Whether a third card is drawn is decided by a fixed rulebook, not by you.

That last point is the whole game: baccarat is a no-decision game. Once your chips are down, the outcome is determined automatically by the drawing rules. You are a spectator with a bet on the result — which matters a lot when we get to “strategy” below.

Which bet — and the real odds

There are three main bets, and they are not close in value. The Banker bet wins slightly more often because of the drawing rules, so even after the standard 5% commission on Banker wins it has the lowest house edge, about 1.06% — the best bet in the game. The Player bet is next at roughly 1.24%. The Tie pays a tempting 8:1, but it carries a house edge of around 14% or more: a classic sucker bet you should simply avoid. Any “pairs” or other side bets are worse still. The honest summary is short — bet Banker, occasionally Player, and never the Tie.

Strategy, honestly

Because baccarat makes no decisions available to you, there is no strategy or skill that changes the odds — and that includes every “system” sold around it. The scorecards and pattern grids casinos hand out (the “big road”, “bead plate” and other trend trackers) are theatre. Each hand is an independent event, so past results tell you nothing about the next one; betting “with the trend” or “against the streak” is the gambler’s fallacy in a nicer suit. No progression — Martingale, Paroli or otherwise — overcomes a negative-expectation bet. The only real edge-management is to bet Banker, keep stakes sensible, and stop while you are ahead.

RNG, live-dealer and provably-fair baccarat

Software (RNG) baccarat deals from a shuffled virtual shoe using an audited random number generator — quick and low-stakes. Baccarat is also one of the most popular live-dealer games, streamed with a real croupier and real cards for a floor-like feel at higher minimums. With matching rules the house edge is identical either way. Some crypto casinos add provably-fair baccarat, letting you verify the deal was not tampered with after your bet — genuine transparency, but see provably fair, explained for what it does and doesn’t cover (it proves the deal was fair, not that the edge is gone).

Bonuses and wagering: baccarat usually counts low

As with other table games, baccarat typically contributes very little toward bonus wagering requirements — commonly only around 5–10%, and sometimes excluded entirely, with bonuses void if you exceed a bet cap. Slots usually count 100%. A big welcome offer can therefore be almost impossible to clear at the baccarat table. Read the bonus terms first, and check the maths with our wagering calculator and our guide to wagering requirements.

Playing baccarat responsibly

Even the best bet in baccarat keeps a house edge, so over enough hands the expected outcome of wagering is a loss, and no bet selection or system changes that. The Banker bet costs you less; it does not make the game a winner. Set a budget before you start, treat it as the price of entertainment, never chase losses, and walk away when it is gone. You must be 18 or older (or the legal age where you live). If it stops being fun, free and confidential help is on our Responsible Gambling hub.

Baccarat and the Jackpot Score

When we review a casino, its baccarat and wider table-game range feeds Game Selection, one of the six sub-scores behind every Jackpot Score (weighted at 15%). We look for a solid spread of live-dealer baccarat tables, fair commission and rules, and provably-fair options where offered — not just whether the game is listed. To compare operators, start with our game guides and the top-rated casinos list.
